What it is used for
Deferasirox oral granules are an iron chelator indicated for the treatment of chronic iron overload due to blood transfusions in patients 2 years of age and older. Deferasirox oral granules are indicated for the treatment of chronic iron overload in patients 10 years of age and older with non-transfusion-dependent thalassemia (NTDT) syndromes, and with a liver iron (Fe) concentration (LIC) of at least 5 mg Fe per gram of dry weight (Fe/g dw) and a serum ferritin greater than 300 mcg/L.
Limitations of Use: The safety and efficacy of deferasirox oral granules when administered with other iron chelation therapy have not been established.

Description
Deferasirox is an iron-chelating agent provided as a granules for oral use. Deferasirox is designated chemically as 4-[3,5-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)-1 H -1,2,4-triazol-1-yl] benzoic acid and has the following structural formula: Deferasirox is a white to slightly yellow powder. It has a molecular formula C 21 H 15 N 3 O 4 and molecular weight of 373.4 g/mol. It is insoluble in water with a pH of suspension of 4.1. Deferasirox oral granules contain 90 mg, 180 mg, or 360 mg deferasirox. Inactive ingredients include colloidal silicon dioxide, croscarmellose sodium, hydrogenated castor oil, lactose monohydrate, low substituted hydroxy propyl cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, poloxamer, povidone (K30) and sodium stearyl fumarate. def-str
